The system also has a Yelp app for local search that's tied into the navigation system, and built-in pay-as-you-go Wi-Fi is also on tap via the built-in modem. Once underway, the engine pulls nicely and evenly. Going southeast it would have taken us up into the snowy even in June La Sal Mountains, which rise to almost 13, feet.

So there we were, hopelessly trapped in what was fast becoming another desperate situation: Surrounded by cubicle walls, we were desperate for help. Things were starting to look grim. How would we get out of this one? Want to come drive them? Just when we had about given up hope and were ready to chew off one or maybe both arms to escape, along comes Jeep to pull us from the quagmire and futility of everyday suburban living.

It still had the same perfectly serviceable 3. It still sent power to the front two or to all four wheels depending on the intention and budget of the buyer. The Cherokees waiting in Moab were all Trail-Rated Trailhawks, the best of the Cherokee line when it came to rock-crawling and off-roading.

When additional traction is needed, the system re-engages rear drive automatically. But those functions are present on the other Active Drive systems. With Active Drive Lock, you get — on top of that stuff — low range and a push-button locking rear differential that allows you and your Cherokee to crawl up and over road chunks at a crawl ratio of That latter coolness is available only on our Trailhawk trim level.

A few days later we had deplaned in Grand Junction, Colorado and were being whisked south toward Moab on the spectacular Highway parallel to the mighty Colorado, under the watchful and patient gaze of the entire Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. They — the Periods - were unimpressed with our Dodge airport shuttle minivan and knew that, even with fierce weatherstripping and various rust preventative measures, they would be around long after minivans had not only fallen out of favor with buyers but had reverted to dust not unlike that which blew across the highway in front of us.

After a night of international relations with media colleagues from Korea, Hong Kong and Australia when have you ever not had fun with those guys? For the most part it was on solid red rock with excellent grip. And while we would lock that rear locker and shift into four-low, there were rumors that a certain local was regularly doing this trail in a Crown Vic. One interesting observation was how easy it was to get a wheel way up in the air. Thus, when crawling over and into holes, the entire rig would teeter and tip with one or two wheels in the air.

No problem - with that locking rear differential, just push the button and keep creeping. Then we headed east on Sand Flats Road to Porcupine Rim Trail, which is technically a bike trail but we only went far enough on the dirt road part to get to the Castle Valley Overlook.

Man what an overlook. As the Colorado Plateau rose and the Colorado kept licking its way through the late Tertiary, remnants of the red rocks resisted. The result is that Castle Valley now enshrines the towering Wingate Sandstone rock formations of Castleton Tower, The Priest and The Nuns, each of which are feet high and look exactly like their namesakes. The Priest in particular is interesting because it looks like a priest from both the southeast and the northwest, both angles we saw it from.

Going southeast it would have taken us up into the snowy even in June La Sal Mountains, which rise to almost 13, feet. But we headed back to the Colorado, where we turned right on Hwy. Upstream from that we turned west toward the Wind Caves, our camping site for the night.

The caves are in the side of hundred-foot-tall sandstone cliffs, the lower slabs of which have been, sadly, graffitied by idiots with chisels. Otherwise the palce was as peaceful as Nature gets. It was just us, the Koreans, the Aussies and a couple thousand grass hoppers. Come morning we beat the arrival of the desert rain and ran across the sand trails to another view over the mighty Colorado, this time from the north.
