Spearheading Maserati 's reemergence as a premium brand on the world market is the striking Quattroporte. This fifth-generation Maserati four-door sedan thrusts into the heart of the luxury flagship segment dominated by BMW , Jaguar , and Mercedes-Benz.

To help realize the dream of a modern, fast, luxurious, and very Italian sedan, Maserati enlisted the design talents of Pininfarina and the technical abilities of corporate parent Ferrari. The result is art, haut couture, technical wizardry, and a proud high-performance legacy rolled into one package. Perched on a wheelbase nearly three inches longer than that of a BMW 7 Series , the "4P" sits low and wide, about 1. It's a design driven partly by tradition and partly by engineering calculation.

The Quattroporte's elegant ovalesque nose evokes Maserati's immensely successful sports prototypes and Grand Prix roadsters of the s, s, and early s. The shape boasts muscular forms, soft curves, and flowing lines combined with a cab-rearward stance.

Twin Xenon headlamps sweep back from the nose into fenders delineated by gracefully bulging wheel arches and a short front overhang. With its long hood, set-back cabin, and compact trunk, the Quattroporte exudes the dash-to-axle ratio of classic sedans.

There's generous glass area, and the rear roof pillars are just broad enough to give some cover from prying paparazzi. Inside this den of bespoke tailoring live rich, soft Poltrona Frau leathers in an amazingly wide palette of colors as well as real mahogany, rosewood, briarwood, or titanium-finish trim. Add together the 10 different leather shades, 15 different exterior colors, and the customer's ability to mix and match different coverings for dashboard, steering wheel, doors, seats, stitching, woods, headliner and carpeting, and it would seem no two Quattroportes need be alike.

The rear seats, sculpted and bolstered to the extreme, are as supportive and roomy as the fronts with plenty of leg- and headroom not often found in Italian cars. It's quiet in this interior, thanks to extensive use of laminated glass and a rigid body structure. An available Executive Package includes retractable wooden tables, sunshades, and rear-seat massage.

Up front, the piloto is treated to the same blend of technology and tradition. Under a classic hooded Maserati instrument binnacle, a large analog speedometer and tach flank a digital information panel.

Automatic dual-zone climate control adjusts for changes in sunlight and humidity and includes a smog sensor that switches to recirc mode if the outside air becomes sour. Numerous buttons dot the dash, steering wheel, and center stack--the Quattroporte's control functions aren't something you'll master in one afternoon.

So is the Quattroporte's chassis. In a radical departure from past practice, the new Maserati follows current Ferrari thinking favoring a rear weight bias. The aluminum engine is mounted rearward of the front wheel centerline, and the transmission is integrated with the rear axle. The intent of this front-midship design is to endow Maser's large sedan with extraordinary balance, placing 53 percent of the car's weight over the driving wheels.
