    Mercedes-Benz G First Test - Motor Trend

From a logical standpoint, the Mercedes-Benz G is a vehicle that should not exist. Surely there isn't a large enough supply of people willing to pay six-figure sums for an SUV with a platform history not all that different from Ford 's derelict Panther platform, and with fewer curves than the Bauhaus Dessau.

Yet, around people in the U. They pay for the experience of driving one of the world's greatest anachronisms. Let's start with the barely-updated-since exterior. Given the G-Class' military roots, it's hardly surprising that function black-bagged form. Its unique, time-honed angularity is actually a huge part of the SUV's appeal, especially today, when just about every SUV this side of a Wrangler or Land Rover Defender has rounded and aerodynamic styling.

The ride of the G is decidedly truck-like. It's shaky on rough roads, often feels like rollover is imminent while cornering, and its steering is loose and imprecise.

Given its body-on-frame construction, lb curb weight, solid front and rear axles, three locking differentials, and recirculating-ball steering, that's to be expected.

Mercedes offers the M- and GL-Class for those interested in a more modern and compliant ride. One aspect of the G-Class that isn't living in the past is its powertrain. Under the hood is a decidedly modern 5. It's no AMG-tuned beast, but the short side-exit exhaust certainly makes it sound like one, especially when it's dumping fuel into the cylinders as fast as its injectors are capable with the accelerator fully depressed. That mean growl, along with the ridiculousness of being able to hit 60 mph in just 6.

The brakes aren't anything special, but get the job done. Coming to a full halt from 60 mph will take feet, which isn't abnormal for heavy SUVs. If you care about fuel economy, you'll have to stop, at least if you're interested in a G. Nobody ever said giving aerodynamics the finger was cheap. Also comical and predictable are the G's performance during our handling tests.

It posted a mere 0. Given the G's seemingly unending desire to tip over in anything resembling a sharp corner why anyone would take sharp corners in a G-Class, I do not know , this firm intervention is certainly wise and justified, but it has also resulted in the G becoming the fourth-worst figure-eight performer we've ever tested. Anachronistic construction elements aren't just part of the G-Wagen's chassis, they're part of the body shell as well.

The four passenger doors must be slammed shut, manhandling the tailgate will give you a decent upper-body workout, and the locks open and close with the sort of metallic secure-sounding clink you'd expect from a the latches on a well-built safe. Sound insulation is typical Mercedes, which is to say that you'll barely hear anything with the windows up.

Visibility is great as long as you're moving forward. The tall ride height and tailgate-mounted spare tire make backing up slightly tricky. The standard rear-view camera helps, but its placement at the top of the tailgate is suboptimal. The G-Class isn't a big vehicle, so legroom will be at a premium should all occupants be six-footers, but there's plenty of space if the occupants aren't. Cargo space is an ample There's also a strangely placed bit of leather strip in the middle of the interior tailgate, a seemingly "because we can" design element that many of us spent time staring at.
