Fiat Lounge First Test - Motor Trend

The week I drove the top-spec Fiat Lounge was a busy one. I had plenty of places to go, and lots of things to haul. I had my doubts the tiny could handle all the moving I needed to do, but I decided to put the cutesy Italian city car to the test. After all, this subcompact hatch is aimed at active urbanites like me. One thing's for sure: The radiates style, and lookie-loos had their eyes glued to it. The metallic copper shade called Rame is a breath of fresh air in the sea of silver, black, and white cars, and chrome bits like the side mirror caps give it the right amount of shine.

Also thrown in was rear park assist, though realistically, there isn't a need for it unless you couldn't parallel park if your life depended on it. Although I prefer a manual transmission in some cars, the is not one of them. The clutch pedal in our long-term Fiat Sport is finicky and feels sticky at times. The opportunity to drive without worrying about a fussy clutch was nice, but I missed out on a bit more sport.

Compared with its six-speed manual counterpart, the six-speed automatic-equipped took 1. As we all know, the is in no hurry to get where it needs to go. The recently announced horse Turbo will no doubt be quicker and offers a middle ground between the Abarth and the base , but Fiat isn't offering it with an automatic. Not a great idea if you ask us. Even though the howled in agony when it was forced to make haste up a daunting grade on the highway, its horse 1.

Engaging Sport mode made throttle response a smidge snappier, but things got jerky in stop-and-go traffic. While its high-riding driving position felt awkward at first, it offered up a slightly more commanding view of the road than most cars its size.

What I could have done without is the mesh sunroof cover, which created an airy cabin but turned the into an oven during several blazing hot L. Aside from that, passengers were astonished at how luxurious and spacious the interior was, even when stuffed to what we thought was full capacity. A large suitcase, small suitcase, medium-sized duffel bag, tuxedo garment bag, skimboard, poster tube, laptop bag, a bag full of shoes, two passengers and yours truly all fit snugly inside.

The rear passenger, standing at 5'8", had a few complaints: His hair scraped the headliner and his knees skimmed the front seat.

The front passenger's knees brushed the glove compartment and occasionally bumped the shift knob into the six-speed automatic's manual mode. On a side note, don't put something you might need en route in the trunk, because you can't just pull over quickly, pop open the trunk, and grab what you need. You must first turn off the car, take the key fob with you around the back, and press the unlock button to open the trunk.

Making that even more difficult are the heavy and clunky doors, and until you get used to it, the all-black key fob makes it tricky to differentiate between the three buttons. Want to hear the most annoying sound in the world? It's not Lloyd from "Dumb and Dumber. It seemed like the frantic beeping began a millisecond after I put the into drive. It sounded with so much urgency I worried I had accidentally activated something that would blow the to smithereens.

The Fiat stands 4. Even with its shortcomings, the Fiat boasts 3. Fold the rear seats down, and you can stuff the to the gills, which I did on a weekend camping trip. At the campground, the little Italian hatch was applauded for all the junk we squeezed in its trunk. Maneuvering the through the tight, vegetation-choked roads was a breeze, as was backing in and out of our small camping space, thanks to the car's tight, For being labeled a prissy uptown city car, the bellissima Fiat didn't mind getting dirty, and instead of having a light appetite, it swallowed big portions of gear.
